Another successful tank trip

17.12.2018

‘The trip went very well and I reckon we can be sure that everyone was satisfied with how it worked out. The trawls from Hampiðjan and its Fjarðanet subsidiary were in the spotlight during the three days we spent at the flume tank and there was agreement that it’s important for deck officers to be able to see how fishing gears perform under a variety of conditions.

That makes the flume tank at the North Sea Centre in Hirtshals the ideal venue,’ said Hampiðjan’s sales and marketing director Jón Oddur Davíðsson, who accompanied the group of sixty guests in their recent visit to the flume tank.

These demonstration sessions have been regular Hampiðjan events for many years and this time guests from Norway, Holland, Russia and Chile were part of the group, along with representatives of Icelandic fishing companies

As in previous years, the emphasis was on demonstrating the latest developments from Hampiðjan in both demersal and pelagic trawl gear.

This included demersal trawls from Fjarðanet, including the Hampiðjan Wide trawl, the H-Toppur, and the Hemmer twin-rig setup that Breki is using.

‘We also demonstrated several variants of demersal and pelagic codends with T90 and DynIce QuickLine technology, and the latest in trawl doors from Thyborøn Trawldoors. As far as the pelagic gears are concerned, we looked at Hampiðjan’s Gloría trawls for herring, mackerel and blue whiting, as these trawl designs have proved to be highly successful in recent years.

‘The model rigs that really attracted attention were the 2048 metre Gloría with 32 metre meshes in the front sections that has been outstandingly successful on herring this past autumn, a new quad-rig trawl system with four doors from Cosmos Trawl, the twin-rig Hemmer layout as used on board Breki, as well as the new Thyborøn Bluestream doors,’ Jón Oddur said, commenting that the flume tank trip also takes in opportunities for guests to familiarise themselves with the latest developments in fish detection electronics, fishing gear sensors and fishing gear technology.

‘Staff from Thyborøn held a presentation on the latest developments in trawl door technology, in particular in semi-pelagic doors. The new Bluestream doors were recently tested on board Kaldbakur and performed extremely well during those trials. Experts from Scanmar explained the latest in fish detection technology and trawl sensors. There was also a trip to the Karstensens Skibsværft yard in Skagen to take a look at the new vessels under construction there,’ Jón Oddur Davíðsson said.
