Guðmundur Gunnarsson decorated with the Order of the Falcon

17.06.2022

Guðmundur Gunnarsson, formerly Head of Development at Hampiðjan, has been decorated by President of Iceland Guðni Th. Jóhannesson with the Order of the Falcon at a ceremony held at the Presidential residence of Bessastaðir, which took place today, 17th June 2022, Iceland’s National Day.

The Order of the Falcon is the highest honour that the Icelandic state is able to confer on any individual and Guðmundur has been chosen on the basis of his pioneering research and development work on fishing gears. He has extensive knowledge and experience in this field, and has been active in his work both in Iceland and around the world.

Guðmundur retired recently from Hampiðjan after an eventful fifty-year career in this field, during which he developed a number of fishing gears, although he is undoubtedly best known for the development of the Gloria pelagic trawl which was a significant innovation at the time, revolutionising the Icelandic fleet’s pelagic trawling activities. Guðmundur needs no introduction among trawler skippers, for whom he has long been a living legend.

Hampiðjan would like to offer Guðmundur its congratulations on this recognition of his work, as well as to offer him our deepest appreciation of his contributions to Hampiðjan’s fishing gear development in recent decades and the collaboration we have been fortunate to have enjoyed with him all these years.
